The Methodist Episcopal Church
was organized in Newark on October 1, 1808 when "The Trustees of the Methodist Wesley
Chapel in the Town of Newark" were elected. But the Methodist Episcopal
Churches roots in Newark go back further. Francis Asbury came to America in 1771 and
preached in New Jersey while traveling from Philadelphia to New York City. The
Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in New York City on December 24, 1784 with sixty
reverends. Francis Asbury was ordained as deacon and elder at this meeting.
Newark was the site of the first conference. Trenton had its first chapel in
1773 with Richard Sause of NYC as a trustee. The minutes of a Philadelphia
Conference said that in 1786 there was a mission in Newark with fifty members.
