The Postal Telegraph telegram was from the manager of Postal Telegraph. Western Union and Postal Telegraph were deadly rivals for business from newspaper reporters who sent their stories, as I often did, by telegraph wire. The "election returns" referred to were the 1940 Presidential Elections which I covered for New Jersey from the Essex County Court House for International News Service.
