When I was between12 yrs. and 16 years old. we lived on Badger Ave. (near Hawthorne I believe). It has been a long time since my family left Newark for California so I'm fuzzy on street names. During the hot summer nights the adults would sit on the stoop or porch and the kids would play around the street. The Good Humor man would come through the neighborhood in his white truck, ringing the bells on top of the truck. How we looked forward to his arrival, both children and adults. The chocolate coated, chocolate ice cream bar was sooo delicious, as were the other GH standards. We would try to catch "fireflys". Everyone who lived on the block knew most of the other families on the block. (In L.A. I don't even know everyone in the same apartment bldg.)
